Chickenpox Treatment

Chickenpox is a highly contagious disease, and for years it had no vaccine to prevent it. However, now there is vaccine called varicella that is 90% effective in preventing the disease. In other cases it can still lessen the severity of the disease.

Chickenpox treatment is used basically to ease the sympoms of the disease while it runs its course. Chickenpox itself cannot be treated. One of the best chickenpox treatment is baths. Cool water with oatmeat from your own cupboard or a specific oatmeal bath product works the best. Chickenpox does not spread in bathwater so it is okay to soak but avoid rubbing the skin and pat dry. This chickenpox treatment works because it soothes the rash and the itch that comes along with it.

Another chickenpox treatment is lotion. Calamine lotion is one that will help dry the blisters so the skin can heal and also help with the itch but there are other over-the-counter lotions that will work just as well. When the rash is scratched it can spread and risk infections so preventive measures should be taken in children to avoid the scratching. Acetaminophen can relieve aches and pains as well as fever. Aspirin should never be given to children. Antihistamines such as benadryl will help with itching as well.

Chickenpox treatment may come in the form of anti-viral drugs that may be perscribed by a physician to lessen the severity and the duration of the disease and is recommended for those with skin problems that may become worse with the chickenpox. Depending on the individual symptoms associated with the disease the chickenpox treatment that may work the best for one person may not work the best for another.
